Numerous human rights organisations, such as the National Commission on Violence Against Women, had struggled to remove the request of this vile and humiliating physical test, which is not only insignificant but also “lacking scientific validity”.
Army chief Andika Perkasa specified that the medical examination required for recruiting should be limited to the assessment of whether candidates are able to have training or not, as it is already for men.
Indonesian human rights representative Andreas Harsono welcomed with pleasure the statements by General Perkasa, but is now waiting to see the draft in the new draft provisions for recruiting and marrying personnel, a detail that is not secondary given previous delays in implementing verbal orders. /tch
