Slovakia plans to open diplomatic mission to Jerusalem in September in order to now fall under the country's foreign ministry.
Slovakia pledged for the first time to open a cultural mission to Jerusalem in 2018, when former US President Donald Trump was in position and was pressuring the international community to forward the US to the shift of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, reports The Jerusalem Post.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put pressure on the issue, with former Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi stressing it to his Slovak counterpart Ivan Korcoc. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid also spoke about it with Slovenia's Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok.
On Wednesday, Korcoc set the date for the opening of the diplomatic mission.
“Slovakia is deepening relations with #Israel by opening the Slovak Institute in #Jerusalem on September 1, 2021,” wrote Corcok on Twitter.
Since the U.S. Embassy moved to 2018, only three other countries have placed their embassies in Jerusalem; Kosovo, Honduras and Guatemala.
Slovakia is expected to become the second European state to support Jerusalem as a diplomatic basis for Israel until Kosovo was first.
