53-year-old Moise has been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor, Michel Martelli, had resigned.
His time in power was covered with accusations of corruption and violent anti-government protests.
There have been major protests in the capital and other cities this year, as many people sought his resignation.
The context with the opposition had also been about his mandate. The opposition claimed the mandate had passed on 7 February this year, while he believed it had another year in office after assuming the president's post a late year.
Moise had received 32.8 percent of the vote in the first round, but an exté of Haiti Sentinel found that he had actually received only 6 percent.
His murder is believed to have political motives. /Periscope
