Merkel, said she sees all six Western Balkan countries as future members of the European Union “for strategic reasons”.
“It is in the European Union's interest to advance this process”, Merkel said at a conference with journalists, after the end of the meeting, where he gathered the representatives of the Western Balkans for the last time, hinting that he is talking about the influence of Russia and China in the region, but not mentioning them.
Chancellor Merkel said that during the virtual meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron had clearly expressed “” his support for the European future of six Balkan countries.
Representatives from Kosovo, Serbia, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, as well as senior European Union officials participated in the summit.
