The Amazon founder and the world's richest man, Jeff Bezos, said on Tuesday he planned to donate $100 million to CNN analyst Van Jones and kitchen chief José Andreés.
Bezos said Jones and Andres were free to do whatever they wanted with the money. “can give it all to charity”, Bezos said at a press conference after his trip to space. “or they can share wealth. It's their business”.
The billionaire added that this money was part of a philanthropic initiative he wanted to call “Prize for Courage and Civilisation”, with which he seeks to honour those who have shown courage and tried to unite people in a divided world.
After accepting the award, Jones said that “sometimes dreams become a reality”. “You believed in me and I really appreciate this”, Jones told Bezos. Afterwards, the analyst, who has already worked as an adviser to US President Barack Obama, said that this money would give to others who share ideals.
Andrés, who has been trying for years to help the poor in the world, said the price itself cannot feed the globe, but added: “is the launch of a new chapter for us”.
The philanthropic initiative comes at a moment when Bezos, and other billionaire Richard Branson, were criticised for spending billions of dollars on their project on space tourism.
