According to foreign media, Barry West, 57-year-old, was on his way to pay the telephone bill near the intersection of Farmers Boulevard and Bailey Boulevard in Saint Albans, Queens.
The blast is believed to have occurred last Thursday afternoon.
West, a father, was caught in flames, but he managed to leave a few moments later, looking surprised at what had just happened. The man is recovering at the Nassau University Medical Center.
