The new law, adopted in September of last year, comes into force today and stops, among other things, “earbills, heels, dishes, straws, spoons and cups”.
Some political packages used for packing are also prohibited.
German law implements the European directive adopted in 2018, after months of negotiations among EU members, which banned several different categories of plastic.
According to the European Commission, products targeted by the directive represent 70 percent of the garbage that ends up in oceans and beaches.
Selling existing stock should remain permitted after 2021.
