North and South Korea have announced that they have restored border communications, which had been blocked for over a year.
Both sides have also agreed to improve relations.
The joint announcement has been the first positive development, from a series of failed summits between former US President Donald Trump and northeastern leader Kim Jong Un.
Northern state media, The KCNA, has said that all Korean interior channels will return on July 27th, in line with the agreement reached between Kim Jong Unit and southeastern President Moon Jae.
They have held their first telephone conversation on July 27th, the ministry for the Union in Seoul has said.
The KCNA has considered restarting contacts as “major steps towards improving trust and promoting reconciliation”.
Southern officials have said both leaders have exchanged many letters since April last year, in which they have agreed to restore ties.
The southeastern president has brokered the first summit held in mid-North Korea and a ruling American president in June 2018.
However, Phenyan has stopped contact with Seoul, following the failure of the second summit between Kim and former US President Donald Trump in Hanoi.
Trump and Kim later met in a Korean border area in 2019.
Since the American president, Joe Biden, has taken power, Phenyan and Washington have not communicated on diplomatic level.
Kim has said in June that Phenjan must prepare for both dialogue and confronting Washington, while the White House has pledged practical access.
The United States demands the disarming of North Korea so that this country can lift severe sanctions.
