The president of the United States, Joe Biden, said on Friday he is planning to nominated Mrs. Malloy Stewart to the post of assistant secretary of state for gun control, a position that in the past had a central role in negotiating treaties like that START with Russia.
If confirmed by the Senate, Stewart would lead the Bureau for Gun Control, verification and compatibility, which functions as part of the State Department, the White House said through a statement. Stewart is currently serving as senior director at the White House Council for National Security.
Stewart has previously served as legal representatives for controlling weapons in the State Department and has been an architect of the framework between the US and Russia for eliminating Syria's chemical weapons reserves.
In February of this year, the United States and Russia extended the deadline for the START treaty for another five years, while at last month's meeting, the presidents Biden and Putin agreed to start talks on strategic stability with the aim of creating foundations for future measures about gun control and risk reduction, writes Free Europe.
New Treaty START went into effect in 2011. This agreement limits the maximum number of ready nuclear heads to 1.550, the maximum number of strategic distribution systems to 700, and ensures the country's country's proven state regime.
