One of the officials also said that the American commander in Afghanistan, General Austin S. Miller, “still remains with all capacity and authority to protect force”.
The withdrawal from Bagram's airfield is the most clear indicator of between 2,500 and 3,500 remaining bodies will also be withdrawn.
Most of Nato's troops have just left quietly this week.
The only American troops to remain are about 650 sosh to protect the American Embassy in Afghanistan's capital.
This time has marked the Taliban's victory in many parts of this country, taking over many districts.
