The US had inaugurated Afghanistan in October 2001 to bring down the Taliban from power, linked to Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaeda figures, the BBC reports.
Between 2010 and 2012, the US had more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, and the cost of war amounted to nearly 100 billion a year, according to figures by the American Government.
By 2018, annual expenses dropped to 45 billion annually.
The total cost from 2001 to 2019 amounts to $822 billion, but does not cut costs in Pakistan, which the US uses for Afghanistan-related operations.
According to a study by Brown University in 2019, the total cost figure was $978 billion, including Afghanistan and Pakistan. /Periscope
