Mongi Slim, head of the organisation, told the Associated Press that the ship, which carried 127 migrants, left Libya's coastal city of Zauara on Friday to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards Italy. He said 46 Sudanese, 16 Eritreans and 12 Bengals were among the migrants.
Defence Ministry spokesman Mohammed Zekir said 84 migrants were rescued from fishermen. He refused to confirm the drowning of other migrants.
Libya is a frequent starting point for migrants who make the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. Some shipwrecks from ship smugglers carrying migrants have occurred in recent weeks as efforts to reach Europe become more frequent amid the warmer summer weather.
The head of the “Tunisian Red Crescent”, meanwhile, launched an urgent call about the fate of hundreds of migrants who escaped death because his organization has no way of providing shelter.
