27 police officers arrested this year, another 65 suspended

For six months in Kosovo, 27 police officers have been arrested, while 65 other employees have been suspended. Mistreatment during the exercise of official office and misuse of official authorisations are the two most frequent acts Kosovo Police members are investigating. The chief chief of the Kosovo Police Inspectorate, Kucep Hodaj, claims there are 358 criminal cases being handled by the Investigation Department. It for Kosova Prees claims there is an increase in citizens' complaints, but also of arrests and police suspensions.
There is an increase in Kosovo citizens' complaints about police work. From January to the end of June, we have accepted 923 citizens' complaints against police officers about various violations. Which complaints have been addressed in the Police Inspectors, 358 of them have been estimated to have elements of criminal acts and have been sent to the Investigation Department to address the Conform Criminal Procedure Code procedures. Meanwhile, there is also an increase in the number of investigative actions and suspensions we have undertaken this year, such as Police Inspectors. 65 police officers have been suspended for these cases that have been addressed. As well as the arrest of 27 police officials for various criminal acts under the authorisations of relevant prosecutors”, Hodaj claims.
Hodaj says that compared to the previous year, there are about 200 complaints more, until it shows what criminal acts police officials have been arrested and suspended.
“The arrested and suspended officials are for various criminal acts. But they are primarily for the work of mistreatment during the exercise of official office and for misuse of official authorization or office. These are the two most frequent works. Meanwhile, there are also deeds due to bodily injuries, domestic violence and various criminal acts”, he adds.
On Friday during a Social Democrat Party action, Kosovo Police have arrested activists of this party. However, the same have complained about the use of violence. The Kosovo government has announced that responsibility for the police operation has been suspended, while Kosovo Police Inspectorate is continuing further investigations into the case.
“We have accepted a complaint from one of the officials who has been participating in that protest. Our inspectors came out to analyze and verify their claims. We will assess and analyze whether there has been mistreatment during the exercise of official duty or there has been overuse of forces, this will be appreciated by our investigators in collaboration with the current workers, if it is estimated that there are elements, of course, will be treated. If it is estimated that there is only exceeded that is in the domain of administrative procedures, then it will be handled by Kosovo Police”, Hodaj reports.
