The CDU, whose current leader Armin Laschet, will compete for the Chancellor's position in September, achieved an improvement in the vote by 2017, winning 37 per cent of votes in this eastern state.
Nationalist Alternative Party for Germany [ AfD] came in second with 21 percent, but that was the worst result of the polls, writes The Guardina, followed Periscope.
The president of Germany's Central Council of Hebrews, Joseph Schuster, expressed his relief for the disappointing night of the AfD, calling the result <x0fitre for democracy”.
The newspaper Der Spegel wrote that after the terrifying spring results, Sunday's result was “prepared something like a debacle” for Merkel conservatives.
Merkel's successor, Laschetet, has ruled out any possibility of a government coalition agreement with AfD. /Periscope
