These elections are seen as the last major test before the national vote in September.
Forecasts by Public Media Portal ARDs speak of the superiority of Mrs. Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, with an expected 36% of the vote, or 6% higher than five years ago in this land with 2.2 million people.
The alternative for Germany, or the AfD, as this far-right political force is known, is expected to get 22.5% of the vote, which represents a low decline compared to 2016.
Although elections in individual bodies are often dictated by local themes, they are also an important warner of the trend for national elections. A clear victory by the Christian Democratic Union would be seen as a signal that its new leader, Armin Laschet, could hope for support from both the conservatives and the centre's forces in an effort to retain power, even after Mrs. Merkel left the Chancellor post. / VOA/
