The Western Balkan Summit has already started in Vienna, where federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has hosted the heads of governments of this region.
Austrian media have published photos from this Sam and from the expectation that Kurz has made to Western Balkan leaders.
The main topics being discussed in this Sam are reportedly the joint fight against illegal migration, the EU's perspective for all countries of this region, the fight against the CoViD-19 pandemic, and economic support that will be offered to these countries after the crisis.
In addition to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, a special representative of the EU for Dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, Serbia's prime minister, Ana Brnabiq, northern Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, Montenegrin Prime Minister Zoran Tegeltija and Belinda Balluk from the Government of Albania are participating.
Kurz, through Twitter, has indicated that during the summit, Austria and police officials have thanked the countries of the Western Balkans and Greece for protecting the borders.
At the summit in the Western Balkans, we reaffirm the joint fight against illegal migration. This is very important, especially before the summer”, he wrote away.
According to data from the Federal Chancellorship in Vienna, about 80 thousand illegal migrants are currently in Greece and in Western Balkan countries.
An article published by Austrian media mentions a statement by Austrian Interior Minister Carl Nehammer, who said “we have drafted a comprehensive repatriation plan and are assisting Balkan states to organise repatriations, because a large part of the people currently standing there have no access to asylum in Europe”, Nemmer said before the summit.
In addition to illegal migration, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz spoke of other important topics that concern the countries of the Western Balkans.
We will fully support these countries on their way to the EU and the fight against pandemic. Last year, unfortunately, the EU had paid little attention to bringing this key region”, he said.
As for the fight against the CoViD-19, Kurz cited co-ordination Austria is making 651 thousand doses of bioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, which are separated from the EU for the Western Balkans.
