The prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, has acknowledged that the decision will anger many Spaniards, but has insisted that this form of action is best to unite the country and help find a political solution to the crisis.
Sanchez finally accepted this long-awaited decision during a speech in Barcelona on Monday, on which he stressed the need for co-existence, generosity and new beginnings, reports Guardian, Croatia's Periscope.
The pardons will be formally approved during the cabinet meeting today.
All nine politicians of the former Catalan government who had not left Spain were sentenced in 2019 for rebellion.
However, the Spanish opposed the Socialist government's action. 61 percent of Spaniards in El Mundo's survey said that they do not support this action, with tens of thousands marching in Madrid to oppose it. /Periscope
