A lifeless body found on Sunday in eastern Belgium may be of a soldier suspected of extreme-right viewpoint who disappeared after stealing weapons from a military base and threatened public figures, prosecutors said, French news agency, AFP, broadcast France 24. “Following first items [...]
“According to the first elements of the investigation, is Jurgen Conings”, the prosecution said in a statement.
The death cause is likely, according to initial findings, to be attributed to gun suicide”, added in the statement, though this remains to be confirmed.
Hundreds of police and army personnel were deployed last month in the 46-year search for Connings, after his abandoned vehicle was found in the area near the Dutch border with four rocket launchers inside.
Konnings, who reportedly served in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, was believed to be armed and dangerous because he was suspected of armed theft from a military base where he worked as an instructor.
The discovery was reported for the first time after a city mayor Sunday. He said that he had found his body during a bicycle trip to a forest near where Connings' car was found last month.
“During my tour on the mountain bike this morning, in a part where few people come, I felt a strong smell of corpse”, Johann Tolllenare told VRT news.
I immediately thought of Jurgen Connings and informed the police. They found the body”, he said.

Among the people that Connings had threatened is Marc Van Ranst, a virologist who has become the target of conspiracy theories, corruption skeptics and far-right flaman in Belgium during the pandemic crisis.
Later it was found that Connings was on a watch list for his extreme right views and had access to the weapon.
