Serwer: I am sceptical that mutual recognition will take place between Kosovo and Serbia

Special Representative of the United States for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer has declared in Pristina that the best way at the end of the dialogue would be to recognise Kosovo from Serbia. However, American Balkan expert Daniel Serwer is pessimistic that there will be mutual recognition of Kosovo-Serbia in the future of [...]

“As far as the final goal is concerned, we continue to believe that it is mutual recognition that will leave the issue behind and pave the way to Europe”, Palmer declared today, during his visit to Pristina.

But that was not heard by EU emissary Miroslav Lajcak, who said the goal of dialogue is normalisation of reports between the parties.

This year has the potential to be a good year between the EU and the Western Balkan countries. There is an increase in interest for the region among the EU leadership and member states. There will be EU summits in October, and these platforms are the best opportunity to move forward for the Balkans, including Kosovo”, has declared Lajcak, who, along with Palmer, remained on a two-day visit to Kosovo.

American professor at Johns Hopkins University and Balkan expert Daniel Cerwer says about RTV Dukagjin that despite the Beden Administration's taking dialogue work more seriously, he does not expect recognition in the near future.

I don't think it can be achieved much beyond an agreement to meet in June, but I would be surprised if any other developments from these meetings could occur. I think the Biden Administration is much more committed to recognising Kosovo's independence and sovereignty within its current borders, but I doubt that will happen soon. You better ask Lajcak and Palmer. Some new agreements on such things as missing people and finance are possible, but I doubt there will be an agreement for recognition”, he said.

The meeting between Prime Minister Kurti and Serbian President Vuciq is expected to be held during June with the European Union's mediation.
