“Russia is our most influential ally in protecting our territorial integrity and sovereignty for Kosovo”, Dacic said in the opening of the “conference. Russia in the Balkans -- a look at the future”.
Since 2014, The EU has imposed various sanctions on Moscow because of the crime annexation, but Serbia has refused to be part of them. As a candidate country for membership in the European bloc, it is expected to support the EU's position in foreign affairs, and this is where Sanxic policies towards Russia enter.
Legally, the obligation to join the bloc's sanctions will only occur after it becomes a member state, Euractiv says. However, many candidate states are trying to follow its line ahead of membership. Dacic spoke of pressure, but did not elaborate.
The EU denies exercising such pressure. The United States is also interested in Serbia joining the sanctions policy against Moscow. /tch
