In a statement to German media, he says that expanding the European Union can bring great benefits to both the region and Europe in terms of security and peace. He underlines that the required reforms must progress, but Brussels must keep its promises.

“Enlargement can bring great benefits both to the region and Europe. It helps to ensure a stable, prosperous, peaceful continent. Reforms must still be completed in each of these countries, but the European Union must also keep its promises and recognise progress”.

On the same line was the day before Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in an interview for the German newspaper Bild asked the European Union to recognise progress made by Albania and Northern Macedonia. Rama said the European Council approved the opening of negotiations in 2018, but due to the internal problems of some member states, the process was halted.

The European Union is already holding accession talks with Montenegro and Serbia, while Albania and Northern Macedonia are official candidates. Northern Macedonia is blocked because of Bulgaria's veto. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are so far considered potential candidates for negotiations. /tvclean
