George Floyd's murder: Prosecutor Wants 30 Years in Prison for Former Officer

Prosecutors have sought from the Minnesota Court on Thursday (June 3rd), a 30-year prison sentence for former police officer Derek Chauvin after last year's post killed African George Floyd. Each sentence “should show that no one is above the law and nobody is below it”, the prosecution said. [...]

Each sentence “should show that no one is above the law and nobody is below it”, the prosecution said.

Chauvin was convicted by the American jury on April 21st, of the Floyd assassination. The verdict on his sentence is expected to be condemned on 25 June.

On Thursday, the prosecution said the murder had “oversmarted the conscience of the nation” and demanded a long sentence.

But the defence described the murder as “a error” based on Derek Chauvin's training.

The murder of George Floyd triggered global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racism and police force use.

Chauvin and three other former officers are accused of violating Floyd's civil rights.

What's happened so far to Chauvin?

Judge Peter Cahill had already decided that there were serious factors in the murder of George Floyd, including the time Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd's neck.

This allows the court to pronounce a sentence longer than 15 years, which is the maximum recommended by the state.

But Chauvin's defence attorney, Eric Nelson, submitted a request to the court Wednesday, demanding a permanent drop-off “ ” a shorter sentence than the court's instructions suggest.

Chauvin's “Operation is best described as a trust-made error, not deliberately conducting an illegal act”, his lawyer said.

Nelson added that his client “was not aware he was committing a crime” and thought he was “simply doing his legal task”.

On May 5th, Chauvin's defence team has submitted court documents allegedly for improper conduct by prosecutors and lawyers.

What happened to George Floyd?

The 46-year-old bought a pack of cigarettes at a store in South Minneapolis, the evening of May 25th 2020.

A shop assistant thought he used a fake 20-dollar bill and called the police after Floyd refused to return his cigarettes.

The officers arrived and cuffed him, but when they tried to get him into the police car he resisted and ended up facing the sidewalk.

Chauvin, 44, placed his left knee between Floyd's head and neck and held it for seven minutes and 46 seconds, according to prosecutors.

Two other officers helped him, while another prevented the involvement of witnesses on stage.

More than 20 times, Floyd reiterated that he could not breathe. He was declared lifeless an hour later in the hospital.
