At least 1.5 billion people have been hit directly by drought in this century, and the economic cost has been hit at a value of $112 billion.
The real cost is probably many times greater because such estimates do not include impacts in developing countries, writes Guardian, translate Periscope.
Mom Mizutor, UN Secretary General's special representative for disaster risk reduction, said: “Tresity is on the verge of becoming the next pandemic and there is no vaccine for it to be cured. Most of the world will live under water pressure within a few years. Request will exceed supply. Drought has become a major factor in degradation of the earth and declining productivity for many crops. ”
She said that many people had the image of drought only in desert regions in Africa, but that was not the case.
The “people have lived with drought for 5 thousand years, but what we're seeing now is something different,” went on.
Population growth is also exposing more people in many regions to drought impacts, the report has said. /Periscope
