The ship registered in Singapore, named X-Press Pearl, went on fire for nearly two weeks before they were extinguished this week.
Hundreds of tons of oil from tanks can flow into the sea if shipwreck occurs, destroying marine life in the vicinity, reports the BBC, translates Periscope.
India's navy and Sri Lanka have been cooperating over the past few days in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent the shipwreck.
But heavy seas and strong winds thwarted the operation.
Environmentalist Ajantha Perera told the BBC that sinking the ship “was the worst possible scenario for the” environment.
With all the risks, nitric acid and all that is there, and oil on the ship, if it sinks, it will practically destroy the entire surface of the sea,” it said further. /Periscope
