Borrell: Russian government wants to destabilise the EU, its members

“Russia does not want to talk to the European Union, it prefers to speak directly to some members that are important in its eyes. The European Union should show unity in order to force Russia to speak with it”, Borrell said.
He presented a document on EU relations with Russia on Wednesday with recommendations on how to improve European policy implementation towards Russia. Leaders of EU member states will discuss these recommendations at a summit next week.
“If member states approve these recommendations, they will have to ensure that they are followed and do not allow Russia to divide us”, Borrell said.
He stressed that good relations between the EU and Russia should not be expected very soon.
“Under current circumstances, a new partnership between Russia and the EU, which will allow for closer co-operation, seems a distant future”, the EU High Representative said.
