US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said US President Joe Biden, and his Turkish counterpart, Rexhep Erdogan, have agreed during this week's meeting that Turkey will take a leading role in securing Kabul Airport after withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan.
However, the two presidents failed to resolve the long-standing dispute over the purchase of the Russian air system -- S-400 -- from Turkey, Sullivan said, adding that dialogue on this topic will continue. The issue has strained reports between the United States and Turkey, allied states in NATO.
According to the US official, during Monday's meeting between Biden and Erdogan at the NATO summit, the Turkish president requested specific forms of US support to secure Kabul Airport and Biden pledged to offer that support, Reuters writes.
Apart from the dispute over the purchase of Russian weapons, the United States and Turkey have different positions on other topics, such as the situation in Syria and the Eastern Mediterranean, so expectations for any major deal at Monday's meeting were low.
As president, Joe Biden has set a much colder tone than the predecessor Trump towards Erdogan. He recognized the massacre of Armenians from the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide, which angered Turkey, and added criticism of the human rights situation in Turkey.
