Approximately 160 million children live in areas of violent conflict, while many children die worldwide as a result of such fighting.
Since 1982, June 4th is marked by the UN as the “International Children's Day not guilty of Aggression victim”. In this case, the Anadolu Agency (AA) has compiled data on children victims of conflicts from UN reports and foundation “Save the Children” (Save Children).

The decision to announce this day was made because of Palestinian and Lebanese children who were at the time endangered by Israeli attacks.

Violence Against Children

According to UN reports, more than 93 thousand children have been injured or killed in conflicts in the past ten years.

The year in which the number of confirmed violations against children reached the highest level so far was 2020. The violations recorded in this period were for 26 thousand more than the 2019 level.

These serious violations have been over 250 thousand since 2005, when the UN started registering data.

Approximately 106 thousand of these violations have been recorded as murder or maim.

Palestine, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and Afghanistan stand out as countries with the highest degree of violations.

Since 2010, about 25 children a day have been killed or disabled in conflicts.

160 million children live in conflict areas

According to foundation report “Save the Children” for 2020, the number of children living in areas of violent conflict increased by 2 percent compared to 2018, reaching 160 million. It is estimated that the total number of children living in conflict areas is 426 million. This figure corresponds to a fifth of the number of children worldwide.

According to 2019 reports of the same report, the most dangerous countries children live in Asia and Africa.

Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen are part of the list.

Children living in conflict areas are deprived of their rights

According to UN data, about 250,000 children are involved in conflicts worldwide. These children are used as warriors, messengers, spies, stalls, or cooks.

Meanwhile, girls are exposed to sexual abuse by being deprived of their rights.

The UN founded Task-Forca in 14 countries to monitor child rights violations. These countries include Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Myanmar, Nepal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, the Philippines, and Uganda.
