The international operation, involving several police forces, targeted the platform of the dark internet [dark net] called Boystown, which has already collapsed.
Officials say Boystown had more than 400,000 registered users, writes the BBC, translates Periscopi.
Some images, they say, displayed the most serious sexual abuse of young children.
Dark net is an Internet area beyond the scope of regular research machines.
Europol has said that other paedophiles were also dismantled.
The detainees are one, 40 years old from Paderborn, the other 49 from the Munich area, and a 59-year-old man from North Germany who had lived in South America for many years.
The fourth suspect is a 64-year-old from Hamburg, allegedly among the group's most active members, responsible for 3500 posts. /Periscope
