From the footage published on local televisions and social networks are seen the pending cars. The town's mayor, Claudia Shanebaum, said that a beam collapsed, causing the overpass collapse. According to her, 34 people were taken to the hospital.
Work on the rescue operation was put off for a while at midnight because the suspended cars could fall to the ground and a crane had to be seized. Inside the accident train there are still people confined, though it is not known whether they are alive, Mayor Shanebaum said.
She also announced that at least one car is trapped under the rubble and that rescue teams are looking to survive. The accident occurred at about 22 and 30 local times. This railway line was opened only nine years ago, writes The Guardian.
The Mexican capital's Metro is the largest metro system in North America behind the U.S. subway network. In 2019 this transport network was exploited by 1 billion and 655 million travelers.
