The Indian Navy said it has saved 177 out of 270 people aboard and that efforts to find other survivors are continuing.
The ship, owned by India's Oil Corporation and Natural Gas, was transporting offshore drilling personnel.
The Indian Navy organised a massive air and sea rescue mission for extinct oil workers, but it is being hampered by large waves.
“There are waves from 20 to 25 meters, winds are powerful and low visibility”, said Navy spokesman Vivek Greatwalk.
Three other merchant ships, with about 700 people on board, are also blocked at sea after the Tachtay Cyclone, which hit India's west coast.
Tauktae landed on Monday in the state of Gujarat, with winds up to 100 miles per hour [160 km].
The storm is weakening, but at least 19 people have already lost their lives and about 200,000 others have been displaced from several regions.
The storm has struck at the time India is facing a devastating wave of the coronary pandemic.
For weeks, this country has recorded over 300,000 new cases per day and over 4,000 victims.
Figures are starting to fall a bit this week. / REL
