At Sunday's meeting, American Ambassador Linda Thomas-Grenfield said the US was willing to offer support to “if the parties require a” ceasefire.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyadh al-Maliki spoke of Saturday's attack on a refugee camp that killed 10 members of the same family.
“Israel often asks us to put ourselves in their place”, he said, adding, “but they don't have shoes. They're wearing military boots”.
In response, Israeli Permanent Representative Gilad Erdan cited the death of a 10-year-old Arab-Israelian girl killed by a Hamas rocket.
He insisted that Israel was using “deaning terrorist infrastructure and avoiding civilian victims”.
Erdan urged the Security Council to condemn Hamas, but warned that Israel would take all necessary steps to defend itself.

The attacks followed objections to a court case to expel several Palestinian families in eastern Jerusalem and in retaliation for Israeli police clashes with Palestinians near the city's Al-Axa mosque, Islam's third most holy place.
