The Social Democrat Initiative has criticised Prime Minister Albin Kurti for failing to organise defence for former KLA leaders being charged in The Hague.
The secretary of this party Bilal Sheriff has said that while in opposition Kurti had declared that the state of Kosovo should co-ordinate the defence of the defendants and that the issue of their defence is government work, while now, as the Sheriff has said, until Kurti is in power is taking nothing in that direction.
At a news conference, the Social Democrat Initiative has demanded that Kurti accomplish what he has declared while in the opposition.
The sheriff has commented on Kurti's speech that he had made at a press conference in November 2020 until he spoke of the need for state co-ordination in the issue of the accused by the Special.
The state of Kosovo must organise and co-ordinate the defense of the defendants, they see, they have their own lawyers, but state co-ordination is needed. This was Albin Kurt's first appointment, now Social Democrat Initiative asks public questions, why Albin Kurti remained completely silent during the process, when the Special Court had to decide on the request of lawyers for freedom protection, the aforementioned KLA representatives and why they did not co-ordinate together with lawyers, as the opposition representative declared the strategy needed to ensure that they are protected in freedom”, the Sheriff said.
The Sheriff has said that since the February 14th elections, Prime Minister Albin Kurti has taken no action through which he would show that he has been taking KLA protection in the international arena and the Special Court.
On November 15, 2020, Albin Kurti stated that protecting KLA representatives is also a government job, it says, is particularly government work. The Social Democrat Initiative issues the second public question to Prime Minister Albin Kurti. We want to know whether the protection of KLA representatives is a government job and especially government work even now when Albin Kurti leads the government, or his position applies only to others, but not to the government he leads”, the Sheriff said.
The initiative has asked Prime Minister Kurti to take the actions it declared while in the opposition.
In November 2020, the Special has arrested former KLA leaders Hashim Thaci, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veselin and Rexhep Selimi, under indictment with war crimes claims.
