According to estimates, patients will have to receive a third dose of Pfizer vaccine 8-12 months after taking the second, Albert Burla, president and CEO of the pharmaceutical industry, speaking at the Economic Forum and Delhi about pandemic.
He rejected the idea of issuing patents for vaccines.
The “that humanity needs to overcome pandemic is to increase the production of affordable vaccines, and in no case the release of copyright and patent rights, as this would delay global vaccine programmes,” he said.
As he pointed out, as far as the price is concerned, his company already offers vaccines depending on the financial capacities of countries that buy it.
In terms of production volume, companies already have the capacity to produce on the levels they need.
Pfizer's goal is to produce 3 billion doses for the whole world this year and 4 billion doses in 2022.
And all of this from one company,” he noted.
Science is like love. It offers great satisfaction but sometimes much disappointment. For now, however, I am optimistic. This substance we're experimenting with kills invitro, also kills the virus in experimental animals and helps people with lung and trachea problems”, he said.
As far as immunity extensions are concerned, Bourla said the Pfizer vaccine covers at least six months, adding that its forecast is that a third dose will be needed 8-12 months after taking the second dose.
Asked whether the vaccine would have to be repeated annually, he said his prediction was that the population would have to develop annual vaccines after the third dose.
Concerned about mutations in the virus, Albert Burla assured that so far there is no mutation that escapes the effectiveness of Pfizer vaccine.
As for the possibility of a new mutation in the future, Bourla said the company is working in 100 days to have installments ready for production and apply to competent authorities.
