Kosovo and Serbia should return to the negotiating table and resolve the remaining issues through talks, US Assistant Secretary of State for Eurasia told Matthew Palmer.
Regarding the Kosovo government's warning that they will file charges against Serbia for genocide, Palmer said that “always has many hot rhetoric” in the Western Balkans and that “is a long backdrop for dialogue”.
He added it is very important that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, return to the negotiating table and dialogue on all these issues.
The “is well understood on which issues should be resolved through a process of dialogue. This process is well-run and competent by Miroslav Lajcak, with support from the United States. It is important that both sides return to dialogue, discuss the issues at the table, resolve them, and go towards an agreement on full normalisation of relations, which, in an optimistic way, would be based on mutual recognition”, Palmer stressed.
Asked what specifically the US administration plans to do to start a dialogue, Palmer said he would work in close partnership with the EU's minister for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak.
He noted the fact that they are in regular contact with political leaders in Pristina and Belgrade to invite both sides to negotiate, work to support implementation of agreements reached through dialogue and to stress the value of normalising relations for Kosovo and Serbia at all levels.
The “is a path towards a European future that aspires both countries”, Palmer said.
Asked if he believes that the Serbian president is sincere in his intention of Serbia being integrated into the EU, Palmer said he thinks Vuciq is absolutely serious on that goal and that he would like Serbia to advance on the European road.
The “is his vision of Serbia's future, is the vision of the Serbian public, to a greater extent, and thus sees the United States' future for Serbia. We are working closely with Serbia as a partner and friend to help implement necessary changes”, Palmer said.
