Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired more than 1,000 missiles in Israel's direction since Monday evening, when fighting escalated dramatically after several days of riots in Jerusalem, the Israeli army said.
Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters Wednesday morning that in response Israel was hitting only military targets and that the army cares to downplay the influence on civilians.
The Israeli Army also announced that it had caught a fear of Hamas early Wednesday.
Israel's military operation in Gaza, dubbed “Gerdian of Walls”, has involved hundreds of air strikes. Thirty-five Palestinians, including 10 children, have been killed in Gaza since Monday. Five Israelis were killed in missile attacks.
On Tuesday, Israeli attacks destroyed a 12-story building in the city of Gaza.
Conricus said the building was used by Hamas for <x0 military purposes and as such qualified as a military target”.
Now many weeks, Palestinian protesters and Israeli police are fighting at daily bases in and around the Old Town of Jerusalem.
There are major religious sites holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
Jerusalem has indeed been the scene of violent confrontations between Jews and Arabs for 100 years and remains one of the most controversial cities in the world.
Recent clashes began a month ago, when Israel blocked several Palestinian gatherings at the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
After those restrictions eased, the plan to expel dozens of Palestinians from an East Jerusalem neighbourhood continued to stir up confrontations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas “has crossed the red line” by throwing missiles towards Jerusalem and that his country will respond to “with great force”.
Formerly, the military has carried out hundreds of attacks against Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza... and we will further intensify the power of our attacks”, Netanyah said in a video released by his office.
He added that Hamas “would be hit in ways that he does not expect”.
Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organization.
