The Durres port has welcomed a large influx of containers and large trucks this week on the eve of NATO exercises. It is about a focus of military means that American officials said was not seen in the Adriatic border country since World War II.
About 700 equipment from the 53rd Florida National Guard Combat Team was being downloaded from the US. HNS Bob Hope in Durres. They will be used for two weeks of training, including up to 6,000 American forces on six Albanian military bases.
This is part of the multinational Defeder-European military exercises 21 headed by the American Army, which are focused on preventing aggression and maintaining operational readiness with NATO and a greater number of allies and partners. They will take place from 17 May to 2 June. “Albania is a valuable partner. Our soldiers benefit by training together, by increasing interoperability, by building operational readiness and strengthening relationships all of these enable our ability to respond to any crisis at any time, together with our allies and partners,”, Tami Muckenfus and the German-based U.S. Army contingent for Europe and Africa said on Saturday.
For Major Randall Moran, the “reunification of all these groups is something very special”. Divers continue to control the 7m bottom of the port. But the two logistical support ships carrying vehicles can operate in shallow water and are working constantly to bring in military equipment. A British military ship will also arrive in the coming days.
Defender-European maneuvers this year have included around 28,000 American, Allied and partner forces from 27 countries to conduct simultaneous operations in more than 30 training areas in more than 12 countries, from Baltic and Africa to the Black Sea and the Balkans. In addition to providing six maritime, land and air bases, Albania, a NATO member since 2009, will commit 1,000 troops to what Defence Minister Niko Pelesh called a historic event because it is the largest exercise in Albania and the region”.
American military officials praised Albania's hospitality, good food, and natural beauty. Mrs. Muckenfus said that “Albania has been an amazing host and has warmly welcomed all our soldiers.” / VOA
