Merkel said Israel is entitled to self-defense and condemned the continuation of the missile attacks on Israel by the Gaza Strip, the AP reports.
The German Chancellor said she hoped the clashes would end quickly, given the victims between civilians on both sides.
Merkel's cabinet said it noted that the German government will continue to give “a firm response against protests in Germany, where hatred and anti-Semitism are spreading”.
One of the main candidates for Merkel's successor, Analena Berbock of the German Gell, condemned the rocket attacks by Hamas and upheld Israel's right to self-defense.
It called on Germany and the European Union to support US President Joe Biden's efforts to mediate between the warring parties.
