United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Machelet said Thursday that Israel's deadly attacks in Gaza could constitute war crimes and that Hamas violated international humanitarian law through the launch of missiles towards Israel. Bachelet said her office has confirmed the death of [...]
Bachelet said her office has confirmed the death of 270 Palestinians in Gaza, the West Coast and East Jerusalem, including 68 children, during this month's violence. Most were killed in Gaza, where Israel and Hamas fought for 11 days, writes Reuters.
The top UN official was declared during a special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held at the request of Muslim states, which have demanded that this commission investigates possible crimes and address responsibility.
Despite Israel's claims that many of these buildings (which were bombed) were areas of armed groups or were being used for military purposes, we have not seen evidence of this”, Bachelet said.
The resolution, presented by the Organisation for Islamic Co-operation and the Palestinian delegation to the Council for Human Rights at the UN, is expected to be voted in later Thursday.
The United States, Israel's closest allies, was not signed to appear in these council discussions, where they have observer status, suggesting they would cause the ninth failure for Gaza since 2006.
