Palestinian militants launched hundreds of missiles in Israel, while Israel carried out major air strikes in Gaza.
Over 40 people have died in the worst violence in years.
Palestinian militants said they fired hundreds of rockets in the direction of the Israeli town of Tel Aviv after an Israeli air strike destroyed a tower block on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
Israel's military says it is targeting militants in Gaza in response to missile attacks in Jerusalem and other areas.
The fighting came after weeks of mounting tensions triggered by violent confrontations between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters in Jerusalem, in the country that is holy both to Muslims and Jews.
The international community has asked both sides to end escalation. The UN peace envoy for the Middle East, Tornesland, said the violence is “escalates towards a full fight”.
At least 35 Palestinians, including 10 children and five Israelis, have been killed in the violence thus far, according to health officials.
