More than a year after the peak of the pandemic, improvised morgues are still seen in Sunset Park.
The New York Council report admitted that around 750 victims of Covid-19 still find themselves in trucks, while measures to reduce their numbers have begun recently.
Dina Maniotis, commissioner of the legal office, said most of them are in Hart Island, near the Bronx, where for more than a century, the city buried the poor and those not wanted by relatives.
“We will continue working with families. Once family members tell us they love their relatives, they will be transferred to Hart Island,” said Maniotis.
With more than a million people buried there, the 2km ground belt is one of the largest tombs in the United States.
In March and April last year, New York was one of the hardest hit areas in the world by the Coronobrus.
Already around 500 to 800 troops remain in refrigerator trucks since April 2020.
85 refrigerator trucks were parked outside hospitals on the bad days of pandemic, becoming one of the most visible symbols of the effects of the disease.
Development Comes as New York City prepares to lift remaining restrictions to return to a normality that has not been seen since early 2020.
