Some diplomats said the meeting, which will be virtual, was asked to be held by France, Ireland and Estonia.
France is a permanent member of the UN along with the United States, the United Kingdom, China and Russia. Ireland and Estonia are non-permanent members this year.

This comes after European Union leaders agreed to impose several sanctions against the state of Belarus, including stopping its airlines from using the bloc's airspace and airports.

EU leaders also demanded the immediate release of journalist Roman Protasevich, a key enemy of authoritarian President Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

EU leaders came to decision at an emergency summit held Monday and are expected to implement the decision to impose sanctions on Minsk as soon as possible, Euronea writes, the Kosovo Clan broadcasts.
