The European Union Council has decided to extend the sanctions regime for a year, which, among other things, affects citizens and organisations from Russia because of their participation in cybercrime.
The EU Council has decided to extend the regime of restrictive measures due to cyber attacks threatening the EU and its member states for a year until May 18th 2022,” is said in the EU statement.
In order for the list of sanctions to be adopted, unanimous support of the 27 EU nations is needed.
Currently, within the sanctions regime, restrictive measures have been applied to eight individuals and four organisations.
Earlier, the EU's foreign policy service proposed that the current EU sanctions regime be strengthened with new restrictive measures due to cyber attacks.
It is also suggested that such sanctions be introduced with a simple majority in order to accelerate the process.
The European Union imposed sanctions within the cyber crime regime for the first time on July 30th 2020, and the list included citizens and organisations from Russia, China and North Korea.
