The European Union (BE), claiming it is satisfied with the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, stressed that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could only end with a political solution.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyeen has urged the parties to strengthen the ceasefire and ensure long-term stability.

A political solution alone can bring peace and security to everyone”, Von der Leyen stressed in her message to social media.

In his statement on the ceasefire, Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said he welcomed the agreement to end the violence in Gaza and praised the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, the UN and the US for the ceasefire, the ATS reported.

“The EU has always reiterated that the situation in the Gaza Strip is not sustainable. Only the political solution will end the Palestinian problem- Israel and will bring lasting peace”, Borrell stressed.

“The EU is ready to support Israeli and Palestinian authorities in these efforts. To that end, it will renew contacts with key international partners, including the US and the Resurrected Middle Eastern Quartet and other partners in the region”, he added.

At least 233 Palestinians have been killed, including 65 children and 39 women, while more than 1,700 others have been injured in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since 10 May.
