Hamas began firing missiles after warning Israel to withdraw from the country, prompting revenge air strikes, the BBC writes.
At least 232 people, including more than 100 women and children, have been killed so far in Gaza, according to its Hamas-controlled health ministry.
Israel has said that at least 150 militants are among those killed, on the other hand Hamas gives no figures of victims for the fighters.
In Israel 12 people, including two children, have been killed, the medical service says. Israel has said that about four thousand rockets have been fired towards its territory by militants in Gaza.
