England's public health (PHE) has traced a version known as B.1.617.2, which appears to have spread faster to the United Kingdom than in other countries.
Scientists believe it is more transmitted than the first version of COVID-19 first discovered in Wuhan, China.
A spokesman for The PHE told the BBC that it does not want to comment on the data found.
Viruses change all the time, producing different versions of themselves. Most of these mutations are insignificant, and some may even be less dangerous, but others may be more contagious and more difficult to deal with vaccines.
The variations from South Africa and Brazil are also considered disturbing in the United Kingdom. These versions, along with India's version, have undergone changes in their protein to the part of the virus that joins human cells.
