Zelel has thanked the United States for blocking the UN Security Council's statement, which would call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and with which the need for child protection and other civilians would be stressed.

On Monday, President Beiden's administration rejected for the third time the draft of a declaration with which to call for a break in violence, and with which concern for the loss of lives of civilians and for the injured, writes Independent.

Since the United States has long history of blocking criticism of Israel in official UN statements, even using it regularly to veto that purpose, there was hope that the US would sign a declaration that Israel and Hamas would call for prevent further human consequences.

On Monday, Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz thanked the United States for preventing the publication of the UN Security Council's statement. According to him, this statement is unfair.

The UN Security Council has 15 member states. Of them, five states are permanent members: The United States, the Russian Federation, China, Great Britain and France. Ten other members are temporary and currently have these seats: India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland, Kenya, Nigeria, Estonia, Tunisia, Vietnam and the Saint Vincent Islands.

States that are permanent members of the Security Council have veto rights. If only one uses that right, no declaration can be adopted in the name of this high organ.
