Biden said the administration will remind states this week that any unemployed American to whom a suitable job is offered should accept it or risk losing unemployment assistance.
He is also instructing the Labour Department to work with states to restore the obligation that those who receive unemployment benefits must prove that they are looking for work actively.
“If you are receiving unemployment assistance and you are offered adequate employment, you cannot refuse that job and simply continue to receive benefits of unemployment”, Biden said.
Republican lawmakers blamed poor employment figures last week for the democratic president's decision to provide enhanced unemployment benefits by August.
Some Republican governors have cancelled extended benefits, using the additional funds for other purposes. /voa
