Participants in a nearly 100 - mile [100 km] race ran in hail, in torrential rain, and in severe winds following the sudden and severe fall of temperatures in the province of Gansu.
The race was interrupted in emergency form about 1: 00 p.m., but not all runners could be located.
A rescue operation was launched that lasted for 24 hours, and closed Sunday, where 21 dead bodies of the 21 missing contestants were found.

A number of elite racers were among the dead, including renowned athlete Liang Ying, who had recently won a 100-pound competition in Ningbo.
The original photos and videos of the marathon showed how some of the marathoners had only dance and cats.
Some of them had later sought help in the WeChat groups.
The death of most runners is believed to have been hypothermia. /Periscope
