By 2050, the population is expected to drop to two-thirds of the EU region

It is predicted that around 802 EU regions will have a smaller population in 2050 than was the case in 2019, while Eurostat's report also says around 414 regions will have a population increase. This information comes from the latest research into regional demographic models conducted in [...]

This information comes from the latest research into regional demographic models, conducted in 31 countries (27 EU member states and four EFTA countries -- the European Free Trade Association.

There are significant changes in forecasts by the countries.

In the regions of Lithuania and Latvia, the population is expected to decline by at least 20 percent.

Bulgaria, Estonia, Romania and Slovakia have only one region for which population growth is projected by 2050.

The other countries, most of which have a negative change in population structure in the region, are the Czech Republic, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Portugal and Finland.

When it comes to the same countries, the average age is projected to grow by four years (from 45.1 to 2019 to 49.1 to 2050).

Only 131 out of 1,16 regions (11 percent) do not expect an increase in the average population age.

The regions of Eastern and South Europe are expected to age faster and for 160 regions of faster aging, the average age is expected to grow to eight years between 2019 and 2050.

Only 10 percent of the region is expected to have a younger population in the same period, and up to eight out of 10 in Germany, where the average age is expected to decline by four years.
