In Jerusalem, missile fire had Israel's parliament evacuated until the sirens were heard. Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians deepened in recent days.
The rulers of Hamas of Gaza had threatened to strike after hundreds of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police in Jerusalem on Monday. Israel said it had killed at least three Hamas militants.
Hamas sources told the BBC that a commander of the Izadine al-Qassam Brigades, Mohammed Abdullah Fayad, had been killed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas had “crossed the red line” and that the current “conflict could continue for some time”.

Serious clashes have recently developed, with more than 300 Palestinians injured in confrontation with Israeli police outside the Al-Aqsa mosque on Monday.
